Dry Hydrant Program

The Franklin County Conservation District started working with local fire companies the last several years to install "Dry Hydrants" for fire companies to use when they are not near a regular fire hydrant. The concept is to give fire companies easy access to stream water by installing a pipeline with a screen on the end of it into the stream. The other end would have a fitting that can be easily attached to get water out of the stream. Several dry hydrants have been installed and more are proposed to be installed.

These above pictures show a completed dry hydrant above a bridge. The pipe extends over the bridge so that a tanker truck can have easy access to it. The picture on the right shows pipe under the stones with a screen on the end to help keep sediment and leaves from getting inside the pipe. This hydrant was installed to be used by the West End Fire and Rescue.
